The Sea is Black.

Within the urban changes taking place in the city of Ramallah, the window that once viewed  the coast line was fully blocked by new rising towers. As a result of the political economic forces, development projects in the downtown in Ramallah and Amman increased, public spaces and green areas disappeared. The city spaces were drastically changed: green areas and older architecture were replaced with new shopping centers. Working on the scenes in a transforming city the green areas and the new rising building became the content of mixed media and collage paintings.

The Sea is Black. 2007: With the emerging rising buildings in the city of Ramallah, my window in the fifth floor, that once looked at the coast silver line in the distant horizon, became fully blocked. This rising building added a close by ‘domestic' barrier that blocked the light from my room and the closed the window with growing cement construction. This brutal invading building entering the view seemed expanding into my private corner, the sense of being suffocated and enclaved became stronger. It added to the inhuman segregation imposed by Israeli cement military barriers which enclosed Palestinians within occupied land. This incident charged the subject of the sea with an intense feelings of longing, desire and agony. It included different scales of mixed media paintings where seascape and horizon line were constructed on black ground. Paintings were minimal in some since yet they had the energy of forceful waves in the darkness. The sea and horizon was chosen as a subject matter. Feeling of phantom inhabitants presence were suggested in minimal elements.
